How to be a cautious car buyer?

By: Shafiq Ezati, On: March 30, 2016, Categories: buy a car, Comments: no responses

Since the dawn of civilization there have been thieves, liars, con-artists and scoundrels. These people are out to cheat people out of their well-earned money any way they can. They are often charming, charismatic, and entirely normal seeming people. And because of this it is often hard to avoid them.

If you are on the lookout for buying a used car, there are numerous red flags to beware of when trying to avoid scams. These red flags are often hidden behind smokes and mirrors, though. Here is a small list of some of those signs that you are possibly being scammed.

Prices that are too good to be true

If you find yourself getting excited over the amazing low price of a used car, calm your jets for a moment. Get in touch with used car buyers and see what this model normally sells for second hand. If it’s well below the norm, it doesn’t mean it’s definitely a scam, but one should take note and see whether any other warning signs show up. Warning signs like:

There is no way for you to inspect or see the car

The story explaining this could be because the car is overseas, or they are overseas, or they don’t have the means to take photos. But this should raise the volume of any possible warning bell system one would have set up in their heads.

Sure, some people sell their cars for ridiculously low cash for cars so they can get rid of them quickly, but if they’re that desperate to get rid of the vehicle they will at least have photos of the car to raise the likelihood of a sale. If someone who is selling a vehicle won’t even show it to you, that is a red flag.

The seller wants the money wired to them, or wants it up front

You should only do this with someone you either know, or someone you know knows them, or if you are doing it through a company that uses escrow. Otherwise, this, especially when bunched up with the previous warning signs, is a red flag that ultimately should alert you to the fact that someone is trying to scam you.

The seller changes stories or terms in the middle of the deal

Again, this type of thing doesn’t normally occur during legitimate transactions. This could be with the site that the transaction is taking place, or a change in the story that they are telling to explain the reason behind something, it could be a change of price, whatever. This is another red flag that should never be ignored.

Take note of these warning signs and sleep easy for the rest of your year knowing that no-one will ever be able to swindle you.
